TotalEnergies RUBIA OPTIMA

TotalEnergies is launching a completely new range of RUBIA OPTIMA truck oils. In terms of technical and quality performance, it complies with the most stringent specifications, such as API: CK-4, ACEA: E8 and E11 and the demanding approvals of Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Mack, Cummins, Scania, MAN designers.

The drastic tightening of API and ACEA standards due in part to environmental restrictions, as well as significant (also environmental) technical innovations in heavy-duty vehicles, have significantly raised the bar of requirements for truck oils. TotalEnergies has therefore decided to replace its entire range of products in this sector. The new RUBIA OPTIMA range is therefore the next generation of truck oils. The use of innovative technologies makes it possible not only to meet the new requirements, but also to better protect modern engines. It also has the effect of reducing combustion and emissions of harmful substances in exhaust gases.

Key requirements

The main challenge for engineers was the new API specifications: CK-4 and ACEA: E8 and E11, which significantly tighten the quality requirements for engine oils. Without radical technological changes at the production stage, they simply cannot be met.

API: CK-4 is the latest standard that significantly tightens the quality requirements, compared to the previous CJ-4. The requirement for improved oxidation resistance (by 100% !) and viscosity loss due to oil shear and aeration is a real revolution. API CK-4 also increases the requirements for protection against catalytic converter “poisoning”, DPF blockage, engine wear, piston deposits and an increase in oil viscosity associated with increased soot (requirement for better dispersion).

ACEA: E8 and E11 are by contrast the tightened quality specifications issued in 2022 and applying to ACEA: E6 and E9. The new specifications significantly increase the oil oxidation requirements in line with API CK-4, but also raise the requirements for anti-wear properties of bushings and rings (new engine test - Mack T12). In addition, the requirements for piston cleanliness, ring baking and sludge in engines when using fuel with increased amounts of bio-components, which are required in Europe, have been tightened (new engine test - Mercedes-Benz). A complete novelty is the mandatory test for oil resistance to aeration (new engine test - Caterpillar).

Response from TotalEnergies

To meet the above requirements, the RUBIA OPTIMA product range uses advanced Inno-Boost Technology. Additives containing the right combination of antioxidants are used in the oil formulation. These active molecules inhibit the formation of oxidation radicals and keep the hydrocarbon chains intact. As a result, the viscosity of the engine oil remains stable and maintains the properties of the oil over a longer period. This has a significant effect on engine life, power, cleanliness, fuel consumption and exhaust aftertreatment system protection.

The new RUBIA OPTIMA range uses Inno-Boost technology to significantly set itself apart from older generation products. This not only allows it to meet the latest API CK-4, ACEA E8 and E11 quality specifications, but also to comply with OEM requirements for maximum oil drain intervals. The observed sharp increase in the power of heavy-duty engines per litre of capacity entails an increase in their thermal load and a significant rise in the oil’s tendency for oxidation. It thus poses a challenge to lubricant manufacturers. The new RUBIA OPTIMA range more than meets these requirements and - equally importantly - is still suitable for older engines, so as to meet the expectations of entire, multi-brand and “multi-generation” vehicle fleets Andrzej Husiatyński, Technical Department TotalEnergies Marketing Polska

This table in text version to be copied is available at the end, under the individual product descriptions.

NOTE: The abbreviation HTHS (High Temp High Shear) appears in selected oil descriptions. This is a measure of dynamic viscosity at 150°C at very high rpm. It measures the shear resistance of the oil layers. The lower the HTHS, the lower the resistance. It translates into higher engine efficiency and lower fuel consumption. However, a lower HTHS also means a “thinner” dynamic oil film. Therefore, the engine by its design (fits, oil pump, roller tappets, etc.) has to be adapted to low HTHS and for this reason low HTHS oils are not backward compatible with older approvals and engines.
